Glowsticks or lightsticks are plastic tubes full of a chemical compound that emit light when they’re bent or snapped, breaking a vial of a reactive compound which floats within. They were invented in the 1970s, and are used in a selection of applications.
Though heavily connected with entertainment events like raves, glowsticks are also used as safety devices and to provide low-light illumination for campers and divers. They’re available in a variety of colours and configurations, including bracelets and necklaces. Most glowsticks contain three compounds: hydrogen peroxide, phenyl oxalate ester, and a florescent dye. Generally the hydrogen peroxide is kept within a glass vial in the glowstick. When the glowstick is bent enough for the vial to begin to break it releases hydrogen peroxide into the phenyl oxalate ester, setting off a chemical reaction which leads to a burst of light. The light is coloured by the dye. Most glowsticks are figured out to run for a couple of hours, though the reaction can be noticeably slowed by putting them in the fridge. Glowsticks may also be made to burn brighter and for a shorter time period with the appliance of heat. As security devices, glowsticks are generally used.
People of every age can use them when they’re out at night to extend visibility, and many kids particularly wear them at Halloween as a part of a costume.
Glowsticks may also be hung to illuminate dark hallways at theatres to provide light which won’t bleed out and be seen by the fans. Campers and divers find them terribly helpful because they’re water resistant, don’t need batteries, and generate light without heat. Glowsticks are also throwaway. Many music events, particularly raves, feature glowsticks. A rave features a spread of electronic music, and glowsticks make a contribution to the atmosphere. Some guests perform with glowsticks, an activity called “glowsticking.” Glowsticks of varied colours might be twirled or juggled thru the air, and in the dim lighting scenarios of a rave, the performance can be hypnotizing. Some rave visitors also take drugs, which may make glowstick performances appear more interesting.
Having glowsticks convenient round the house and auto for safety is a great idea, particularly if you run or walk at night. Many glowsticks have clips, so you can attach them to clothing instead of having to carry them. Select a distinct colour which won’t be mistaken for the light of an automobile, eg green. Remind people that reside in the house to use glowsticks and other safety equipment while out at night to stop accidents.
